New Zealand’s largest city to allow pets on public transport

Auckland’s bus services will welcome small domestic animals in a carrier bag from 26 December.

These new rules will be in place for a trial period of six weeks, after which time Auckland Transport will look to allow larger dogs in approved muzzles on-board buses.

“This is another fantastic step towards making Auckland a more pet-friendly city. We are finally catching up with international cities where pets are welcome on all forms of public transport,” said Darek Koper, Group Manager Metro Services.

Since 2020, train passengers can carry their pets on board at off-peak times and free of charge. The aim of local authorities is that pet parents will also take the buses with their animals from now on.
