What are the top pet food searches on Amazon?

NielsenIQ shares their analysis of pet food related searches on Amazon. And it’s clear what the opportunities are for manufacturers and retailers.

When looking at the top pet food related keywords, it’s difficult to overlook how health-focused consumers are.

In the 12 months leading up to July 2021, millions of searches for pet food included keywords like raw, vegan and protein or functional ingredients like pumpkin.

And this trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

In the second quarter of 2021, searches for pet food characteristics including organic, low-calorie, diabetic support, seafood-based pet food saw as much as triple-digit growth compared to the previous quarter. 

The opportunity

While it’s clear what consumers are looking for, there seems to be a gap in their ability to find those products.

For example, less than 1% of products that possess the growing attributes above actually claim those characteristics on their packaging. Or, only 28% of pet products make a “free from artificial flavors” claim, but 94% of products within the space actually qualify for that claim.

So the opportunity for retailers and manufacturers is obvious:

Be more specific about product attributes, and align with what consumers are looking for.

Doing this will make it easier for consumers to find what they’re looking for. And it will help your products to show up more frequently in online searches or to be picked from shelves at the store.
