Is Kangaroo pet food in danger?

The Association said it is against killing wild animals for commercial purposes unless the practice is controlled by “an animal management program that meets certain criteria.”

“RSPCA is opposed to the killing of wild animals for commercial purposes (e.g., for food) unless that is carried out as part of a wild animal management program that meets certain criteria, including justification to mitigate negative impacts caused by the animals involved,” said a spokesperson to GlobalPETS.

The non-profit entity, which works with the government to establish standards for animal care across several industries, removed pet food containing kangaroo meat from its e-commerce platform.

“This is based on current concerns about animal welfare implications in the sourcing of these products.”

According to the Australian Wildlife Protection Council (AWPC), 27,900 kangaroos have been killed at Canberra Nature Park in the last 12 years.

Strong opposition

Campaspe Meat Company announced its plan in 2021 to open a pet food plant in Inglewood (Victoria). It would process 1,000 kangaroos per week for pet food, with a goal to reach 5,000 animals in a short period of time.
 
The company faced strong opposition from activists, that collected 7,000 signatures against the project.

In April 2022, Loddon Shire Council rejected the application to create the new pet meat facility due to “zoning issues.”
