A research institute in Norwich, England, partners with a manufacturer to eliminate pathogenic bacteria in raw pet food.
Professor Rob Kingsley from Quadram Institute, a food and health research center, is collaborating with a producer to explore new methods to eradicate bacteria, such as salmonella, from raw pet food.
This project, which aims to decrease the risks of no-cook pet food, is part of 6 projects to receive funding ranging from £30,000 (€34,000) to £62,000 (€70,500).
The grant, funded by the UK Food Safety Research Network (FSRN), will help researchers to implement natural eradicators of bacteria and bacteriophages (viruses). It will also provide a “safe intervention” to be utilized during processing to reduce salmonella risks from raw pet foods.
If these bacteriophage combinations show promise in this sector, the results could be applied to other food production settings.
According to a survey from the American Pets Products Association (APPA), 3% of dog and 4% of cat owners reported purchasing raw pet food.
