2016 patterns textures materials colours
This season Mother Earth, yet again, serves as a great source of inspiration for prints inspired by the natural world, organic materials and earthy colours. Landscapes, cultures and emotions play a big role in the fashion designs of 2016.
3D-crafted textures
Earthy elements can be found in several 3D textures. In the use of fabrics, for instance, in which a diversity of techniques has been applied. Layers, laser cut designs and embossed materials come to mind as well as heavy woollen embroidery. Volume and shape are important characteristics. This trend sees the use of a mix of several materials. Besides shapes like icy landscapes, crystal look fabrics and cloudy contours, there is also room for textures that just give us a joyous sensation.

Introversion vs. extraversion
We live in a period of introversion and simplicity, which can be seen in prints inspired by the natural world, mineral colours and loose shapes. But an outburst of colourful emotions is coming. Some people need to escape from all of the impulses, while others see a chance to promote their culture and speak up. This mix of trends can be combined into back-to-basic designs with unexpected elements of history and tradition. Like shown in so-called ‘Latin glamour’, where Latin American heritage is promoted in several fantastic collections. Some designers are even going all the way with a big explosion of colourful botanical prints, uneven geometrical prints with a ripped and torn effect or patterns with a historical reference. Examples are Christopher Kane, Gucci, Balmain, and the H&M Conscious Exclusive collection.

Functional fabrics Today’s conscious consumers are looking for highquality materials and techniques with a nostalgic feel. This is why cotton and denim with a canvas twist are often combined in fashion items. The denim focus is here to stay! Denim is still being experimented with in various shapes, thicknesses and textures. You can find it in any kind of fashion product or accessory. Designs referencing the 70s, like the use of several patches of denim in one piece of clothing, are seen in this trend. And Indigo and tie-dye are key elements when it comes to 2016 denim-like patterns.
