The Canadian ingredients manufacturer claims transparency of salmon and fish oils used in pet nutrition products.
Bioriginal Food & Science achieved the ORIVO Origin verification, strengthening trust and confidence that the product tested on the label is exactly what it claims.
The company believes this new label provides an “advantage over competitors” by guaranteeing evidence-based transparency of its raw materials for food and supplements.
“We have been working hard to grow our marine oil business in the pet nutrition market, and one thing we noticed was an increasing demand from pet owners related to transparency of ingredients,” says Cameron Kupper, Bioriginal’s Vice President of Trading and Business
Development.
Matching Omega-3
ORIVO’s technology matches omega-3 products with their reference database to prove the raw material’s authentic origin, including species and geographical area.
According to ORIVO’s CEO Svein Erik Haugmo, consumers “deserve to know what’s in the products they consume, and what they feed their pets.” He adds, “Our verification process and certification provide brands the ability to make sure consumers have that confidence.”
Poor compliance
ORIVO is a Norwegian company that has certified the origin of food and feed-related ingredients and products since 2014. ORIVO also tests consumer products through clients’ regular sales channels.
Using DNA analysis methods, the company recently screened 35 pet food products across the US and Europe to analyze if they were composed of single or multiple species. According to the company, the results showed that almost 60% of the products did not comply with the ingredients listed.
Similar testing by ORIVO on omega-3 products purchased from e-commerce sites in Asia showed that as much as 45% of tested products did not contain the ingredients declared on labels, according to the company.
