The Real Pet Food Company (RPFC) says it is the first Australian pet food manufacturer to receive an exclusive import permit for pure black soldier fly (BSF) meal.
RPFC highlights its potential for its hypoallergenic benefits, which could aid nearly 2 million dogs with allergies in Australia.
“BSF requires less food, water (drought proof) and space compared to traditional protein sources, all without compromising on taste and nutrition. It really is an impressive innovation that would not be available to the market without the approval of the import permit,” says Briar Taylor, Global Brand Development Manager at RPFC.
More applications soon?
GlobalPETS learned that several import permit applications for BSF pet food products are currently being reviewed.
“We can confirm that the department is currently undertaking biosecurity assessments of several import permit applications for BSF products to be used for various end uses, including pet food,” confirms a spokesperson of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF).
The authority clarifies that it has already issued permits for retail-ready and bulk BSF products but has not disclosed the holders from the pet food industry due to confidentiality.
Regulatory process
Companies importing BSF products in Australia have to obtain a permit under the Biosecurity (Conditionally Non-prohibited Goods) Determination 2021, as they are classified as biological goods that could pose a biosecurity risk in the country.
Organizations must apply to the DAFF and undergo a biosecurity risk assessment to secure a permit, which is only granted if the goods meet Australia’s Appropriate Level of Protection (ALOP) as outlined in the Biosecurity Act from 2015.
