A September survey of 7,945 Americans by the National Retail Federation (NRF) revealed that pet owners will likely spend $700 million (€644.9M) on pet Halloween costumes.
In comparison, spending on adult costumes is expected to reach $1.8 billion (€1.6B), while spending on children’s costumes is projected to be $1.3 billion (€1.19B).
The majority of consumers find costume ideas through online searches (38%), retail stores or costume shops (28%) and recommendations from friends and family (20%).
In another survey of 2,000 US consumers conducted by LendingTree, an online lending marketplace, 13% of shoppers said they plan to buy costumes for their pets, with Gen Z pet owners showing the most enthusiasm for this trend. This data was collected between 2 and 5 September 2024.
Costume types
The NRF survey also reported that 10% of shoppers are expected to choose pumpkin outfits for their pets, 6% prefer hot dog costumes, 4% plan to dress their pets as bats and 3% each as ghosts or bumblebees.
Other popular pet costume ideas include cats, spiders, witches, lions and devils.
