New product developments based on functional fibre are showing continuous growth. Better understanding of the functionalities of fibre types is key to success.
Functional fibre for added fortification
The texture and uniformity of pet foods are key. Given the variable nature of pet food ingredients and the complexity of the manufacturing process, creating the right consistency can be a challenge. A small amount of a novel type of fibre based on long cellulose particles is gaining enormous traction in various types of ‘grain-free’ recipes with higher meat inclusion. In wet pet foods, the long and thin cellulose particle enhances texture in meat chunks and reduces syneresis because of the high water retention and emulsion capabilities of the fibre.
On-trend pet food segments
Smaller pet food segments like raw/frozen foods and meal toppers are growing rapidly. These product categories allow pet parents to put their own touch on mealtimes. The category of pre-prepared complete raw foods is still more a niche segment because of handling and preparation time. In frozen foods, syneresis is very common. When defrosting, cellulose gels prevent moulded products from losing their shape and leaking out liquids. Existing frozen food lines were redesigned with these easily dispersible cellulose gels to offer more convenience for pet owners. The use of a fibre gel is also paying off in gravies and mix-ins.
Fibre innovation for more differentiation on shelf
Pet food products are following the same trends as human foods. For instance, supporting active lifestyles and addressing specific health needs by the use of functional ingredients. Developing innovative marketing concepts with appealing ingredients is still a major challenge for the pet food industry.
Microbeads made from natural and biodegradable cellulose fibre ingredients are a new concept creating an exciting innovation platform for more complete solutions in dental foods. The cellulose microbeads are compressed by an intense mechanical process to create round shaped pearls with a size of up to 1 mm. These co-processed fibre pearls resist impact by heat and moisture and survive even harsh manufacturing processes such as extrusion, tabletting or retorting.
Getting greener with natural fibre ingredients
Clean label, sustainability, natural products and the right fibre ingredient are key. Plant-derived co-products of the human food chain has become a rich source of innovation for fibre ingredients. Fibre made of locally sourced apple pomace is a preferred choice because of its composition of insoluble and soluble fibres, as well as pectin. Apple fibre delivers nutritional benefits due to prebiotic effects and provides also a positive sustainability story for brands. Pectin enhances the binding of moisture and oil. In semi-moist foods, it replaces chemical emulsifiers and moisture-binding agents.
Opportunities for innovation
Developments in the field of fibre ingredients provide opportunities for innovation. As pet food product developers brainstorm the next big chewy dog treat or nutritionally complete cat food, they may be open to ideas for entering new areas.
