The decision was approved by Petco’s Board of Directors on 4 April, citing it as a termination without cause under its Executive Severance Plan. The American pet retailer adds that MacDonald will be eligible to receive separation benefits as per the plan, subject to a release of claims.
The company made the brief announcement in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and has not commented on whether it plans to replace the former CCO.
MacDonald joined Petco in July 2019 as its Chief Digital and Innovation Officer, a role he held for nearly 3.5 years. In August 2022, he was promoted to the newly created Chief Customer Officer role, tasked with overseeing the company’s digital team, marketing, data science and customer service.
Before joining Petco, he was Vice President and Group General Manager of Entertainment in the e-commerce division of US retail giant Walmart for 2.5 years.
