Barcelona-headquartered low-cost airline Vueling has partnered with Belgian pet food company Edgard & Cooper to offer ‘buy-on-board’ pet treats for passengers traveling with companion animals in the cabin. This makes the airline the first to carry an initiative of this kind in Europe.
“Based on consumer demand of people traveling with their pets, we have identified the potential to sell such products on board,” an Edgard & Cooper spokesperson tells GlobalPETS.
The menu includes chicken bars for €3.50 ($3.78) and lamb and beef bites for €5.50 ($5.9).
Just the beginning?
The pet food brand believes that the increasing consideration of pets as family members “translates into a greater willingness to invest in their welfare and comfort.”
“We expect that on flights with pets, 1 of 5 will buy these products,” says the company.
Edgard & Cooper believe that “this is just the beginning” of the access they foresee in different industries toward accepting pets in different environments as part of the family.
Vueling Airlines increased the number of in-cabin pets allowed per flight from 3 to 5 last May, opening new opportunities for the industry. Dogs, cats, birds (excluding birds of prey), and turtles/tortoises weighing 8 kg or less are allowed to board the aircraft in pet carriers that are 45 x 39 x 2 cm in dimension.
