The local industry posted sales revenue of €1.4 billion in 2021, an increase of 10%.
The figures by the National Association of Manufacturers of Food for Companion Animals (ANFAAC) show that the local pet industry is recovering from the pandemic and the sales are even greater. Domestic sales accounted for €1.2 billion in 2019.
Cat food experienced the biggest growth, reaching €575.7 million in 2021 (+12.7%). Dog food sales reached €917.3 million but the growth rate was lower (+8.4%).
Spanish pet food companies produced 565,395 tons of pet food last year. The bigger increase was again among cats (+8.6% to 171,221 tons), followed by dogs (+3.2% to 394,174 tons).
Offline channel
All pet food categories recorded growth in 2021 compared to the pre-pandemic period. The biggest growth occurred in the cat snacks (+32.2%) and cat wet food (+31.6%) segments.
ANFAAC highlights that the growth was leveraged by the “good performance” of pet stores, with sales growth of 13.5% in 2021. The research also reveals that the sales of snacks for both dogs and cats increased by 24%.
According to the European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF), Spain is the fourth European country in terms of numbers of cats and dogs (15.1 million).
