What’s going on?
Recently, there has been a series of recalls of snacks and treats in the US.
After a wave of pet food recalls in 2007, we have recently seen several new recalls of pet snacks and treats in the US. This has brought the issue of pet food safety into the spotlight once again, leaving pet food and treat marketers to allay consumer concerns about their products. A recent Packaged Facts survey indicates that the majority of pet owners is concerned about the safety of the treats they purchase for their pets.
Just last year, PETCO and PetSmart stopped the sale of Chinese-made pet treats for this reason. As a reaction to the recalls, demand for products made with local and natural ingredients is increasing even further, Packaged Facts states in another report.
Conclusion
The above considerations of both the PFI and European FEDIAF imply that the recent recalls seem to be incidental and there is no need for concerns about the overall safety of our pet food and snacks market. Both organizations do, however, stress the importance of quality control and extensive safety practices. An important conclusion is that pet food safety should never be compromized.
