The European-based online pet store Zooplus opens a webshop with premium pet food under the name Medoca.
Medoca has pet food products on the shelves that cannot be found with the main Zooplus brand. That is, for example, diet food, nutrition prescribed by vets, but also high-quality accessories.
For the time being, the shop only delivers to the German-speaking market. It is not inconceivable that the label will also be introduced to other markets if it has proved successful.
Five years ago, Zooplus launched a budget shop under the name Bitiba.
Last week the German company Zooplus published the financial figures for the first quarter (PDF). Compared to last year, sales were thirteen percent higher at 363 million euros. The profit before tax is 4.5 million euros negative. That loss is a million smaller than a year earlier. The company consciously incurs additional marketing costs to accelerate growth, with the negative result as a result.
Zooplus experiences competition not so much from pet stores, it has already left it behind, but mainly from local specialists and platforms such as Amazon and bol.com.
