Belgian pet market increases 42% in 4 years
New research by the Belgian trade association Comeos concludes a value of nearly €3.5 billion.
More than half (53%) of Belgians will own a pet in 2022. This number contrasts with just 10% in 2018, according to a new survey of 2,500 pet owners in the country.
According to Comeos, 1.3 million pet owners own 1.6 million domestic dogs.
The research also points out that dog food sales in Belgium represent €731 million. “It is estimated that the growth in the number of dogs alone generated €62 million in additional expenditure on dog food,” it said.
As a result of this steady increase, Belgians are spending more on food, toys, care, and medicine for their pets. Comeos concluded that each pet parent spends an average of €549 per year on dog food.
The Chihuahua is Belgium’s most popular dog breed, followed by Maltese and Shih Tzu.
Fewer cats?
On the other side, the results show a decrease in the number of cats by about 3% to 2.3 million. Comeos states, “It is important to note that nearly 40% of cats are not yet microchipped.”
In the last 4 years, the local pet industry has been accelerating at a yearly rate of 11%, driven by an increase in the dog population.
Research also confirmed strong growth in the e-commerce channel, with 45% of pet owners buying food online, up from 28% in 2018. Nearly 2 out of 10 Belgian pet parents buy pet food exclusively through online channels.
Comeos observes an upward trend in pet services like grooming, walking, and care. Almost 50% of dog owners and 25% of cat owners use pet care services regularly.
