Canadian and UK innovation agencies invest $5.7M to boost plant-based pet food
The partnership focuses on advancing research to incorporate animal-free collagen in pet and human foods.
Protein Industries Canada (PIC) and Innovate UK are investing CAD 5.7 million ($4M/€3.8M) in a bilateral initiative to advance 2 projects in the plant-based protein sector.
One, in particular, focuses on developing sustainable, plant-based solutions for pet and human nutrition.
The collaboration involves Canadian sustainable ingredient company Liven Proteins and pet food startup ALT-PRO Advantage partnering with UK-based pet food brand Formidable Foods and biomanufacturing technology firm New Wave Biotech.
As a result of the partnership, ALT-PRO plans to launch a new line of plant-based dog chews featuring Liven’s animal-free collagen via Juicy Marbles, its plant-based meat brand.
PIC has pumped CAD 851,723 ($605.4K/€574.7K) into the project, while the consortium contribution stands slightly over CAD 1 million ($712K/€677K).
All-round solution
The partnership aims to solve challenges related to the taste, texture and nutrient composition of plant-based alternatives in both pet and human food while addressing sustainability concerns surrounding meat farming.
Liven’s collagen ingredient is expected to undergo testing across various food applications. Juicy Marbles will provide insights to enhance ingredient performance and product formulation.
The process will also leverage artificial intelligence-driven solutions from New Wave Biotech to optimize production and create a low-carbon footprint solution.
“This partnership will enable further improvement and validation of our solutions and support our innovative partners in bringing exciting whole-cut meat alternatives and enhanced pet nutrition options to the market,” comments Fei Luo, CEO of Liven Protein.
Supporting bilateral economy
The initiative aligns with Canada’s goal of setting up a CAD 25 billion ($17.8B/€16.9B) ingredient and food processing industry, aiming to create new markets for Canadian crops, generate local jobs and support new economic development across the North American country.
“This partnership opens up promising export opportunities for the UK, fostering economic growth while simultaneously responding to global consumer demands for sustainable and nutritious food options,” adds Dr. Stella Peace of Innovate UK.
