Canidae launches “disruptive” kibble refill stations
The pet food manufacturer implementing this new system in Petco stores wants to eliminate the use of single-use plastic pet food bags.
Pet parents can buy kibble through a self-serve merchandiser, using reusable kibble bags, across 100 Petco locations. These locations include California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, and Texas.
Canidae CEO Bret Furio said this is a “disruptive technology” that took a “tremendous amount” of thought, research, and hard work to deploy.
“I’m incredibly proud of our team for making it a priority to change the way pet parents think about producing and buying pet food,” he added.
Shari White, Senior Vice President of Merchandising at Petco, said they are “thrilled” to partner with the pet manufacturer and offer pet families “an easier way to significantly reduce their consumption of single-use materials while shopping for their pets.”
Canidae expects to sell nearly 400,000 pounds of food in the first year of operation and save the use of 50,000 bags.
How it works
Each bag holds up to 24 pounds of food and comes with a zipper top and handle for easy transport.
When using the Kibble Refill Station, pet owners can choose between two Canidae recipes: Canidae Pure Salmon and Sweet Potato and Canidae Sustain Cage-Free Chicken. According to the company, consumers will pay less than $3 per pound, saving up to 40% on a bag of food.
The company started a pilot program in San Diego and Los Angeles in February 2022, with more than 5,600 pounds sold.
