Cargill to open second pet food facility in China

Cargill to open second pet food facility in China

The new factory will help the company increase its pet food offering in the Asian region.

The new plant, near Shanghai, will open in the coming months, with an annual capacity of 60,000 tons.

GlobalPETS learned that the production site would serve Shanghai, the eastern coastal provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and the wider China region.

It will also help Cargill improve its pet food offering to comprise high-quality, meatier products.

The Minnesota-headquartered company already operates a pet food facility in Zhenjiang (Jiangsu province) and has been in the country since 1884, offering a range of animal nutrition products.

Cargill runs more than 30 animal nutrition factories in the country, producing its own pet food brands and private-label products. It is also an ingredient supplier across North Asia, North and Central America, Europe, and India.

Category growth

Cargill is seeing an increasing potential for pet food in Asia that continues to “outpace the aggressive growth being experienced by the category globally.”

“The Asian Pet Food market also continues to be a [dog and cat food leader] in terms of sophistication and premiumization, reflected in Cargill’s strong super-premium portfolios in both China and Korea,” the company told GlobalPETS.

Cargill continues to “strengthen” its PetMaster brand in China, while in South Korea, it is anticipating “great things” led by its health-driven portfolio with brands such as Healthpedia and Anabrush.
