Conad earnings up steeply as Italian supermarket chain opens new pet supply stores

The retailer’s pet retail segment drove growth in 2024, with pet store turnover reaching €140 million ($144M).

According to preliminary data from the company seen by GlobalPETS, Conad posted 17.8% year-on-year (YoY) growth in its pet retail business in 2024 and now ranks as the third-largest retailer in Italy.

Earnings increase

The firm’s pet business grew faster than the company as a whole. Earnings for the Conad reached €21.1 billion ($21.7B), up 4.5% year-on-year (YoY).

Conad, which launched its specialty pet stores 8 years ago, opened 26 locations across Italy in 2024. Now, it has 166 locations nationwide.

The retailer recently began offering customers benefits on veterinary expenses as it partnered with BluVet, a major veterinary clinic.

2025 outlook

Growth in Conad’s pet shops may continue as the company plans to expand its reach by a further 20 or more locations this year.

The company also anticipates new services becoming available through its online app, HeyConad, which launched in 2022. However, it plans to test new benefits, including a broader pet product offering, through its e-commerce channel.

Over half of Italians own pets, and many of them support the trend of pet humanization. A recent survey showed that over one-third of younger Italians are open to having pets instead of children.
