Greencross expands footprint in Aussie pet retail
The owner of pet store chain Petbarn recently acquired independent retailer Habitat Pet Supplies.
Australia’s largest pet care provider, Greencross Pet Wellness Company, has announced its plans to acquire Habitat Pet Supplies, a Melbourne-based family-owned pet retailer established in 2012.
The firm, which already owns 200 Petbarn stores across the country, plans to offer pet owners a wider and more accessible range of products and services across pet care, grooming, and general pet products.
Under the deal, Habitat Pet Supplies’ 5 stores across the capital of the Australian state of Victoria will be merged with Petbarn.
The company said the merger would not result in any immediate changes to suppliers or store teams, and both companies will operate independently until the transaction completes. The takeover needs to receive the green light from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
The forefront of pet retailing
Habitat Co-Founder Dean Pantalleresco shared his enthusiasm over the merger. “Since establishing Habitat, we have focused on being at the forefront of pet retailing, adapting to industry growth and the evolving needs of our customers. We look forward to continuing this as part of the Petbarn network.”
Petbarn COO Scott Charters expressed excitement to continue providing exceptional customer service and education to local pet parents under the Petbarn brand.
George Wahby, Greencross Pet Wellness Company’s CEO, stated his delight over the shared vision of “providing the best health and wellness for pets.”
The pet care firm will open a multidisciplinary Animal Referral Hospital (ARH) in Minchinbury later in 2023, a suburb in western Sydney. This will be added to the recent acquisition of the Centre for Animal Referral Emergency (CARE) and the Vet Hospital at the University of Melbourne that opened in February 2023.
