Indian insect start-up to expand business in Europe

Loopworm has recently secured certification to export its silkworm pupae-derived products to Europe.

The Bengaluru-based company is set to enter the European pet food market after securing EU TRACES certification. This will allow it to supply sustainable and innovative ingredients for pet, animal and aquaculture nutrition across the region.

Since the commercial launch of Loopworm’s production facility in 2024, the site has been supplying protein and fat products primarily to Asian aquaculture markets.

With an annual production volume of 6,000 metric tons, the company is expected to meet Europe’s growing demand for sustainable pet food solutions.

This development follows the certification of another Indian insect producer, Arthro Biotech, in October 2024 and Veolia, a Malaysian player, in late 2023.

Further innovations

“We are thrilled to enter the European market and are already in discussions with multiple pet food companies eager to integrate our products into their formulations,” says Loopworm Co-founder and CEO Ankit Alok Bagaria.

The company’s products, including silkworm pupae meal concentrate and whole dried silkworms, are known to feature a minimum of 65% protein content and Omega 3, 6 and 9 fats.

They are primarily targeted at enhancing digestion, joint health and overall vitality and can be used for dog, cat, reptiles, ornament fish and bird nutrition.

However, according to local media, the company is actively expanding its product line for the pet food industry. It plans to introduce silkworm-derived palatants and flavor enhancers and explore anti-diabetic and anti-obesity solutions for companion animals.

Loopworm is also exploring biomolecular applications for high-value animal therapeutics, which could potentially redefine veterinary care through cost-efficient and innovative biological solutions.
