Korean telecoms operator develops AI-based veterinary X-ray

SK Telecom’s X Caliber can detect 17 types of musculoskeletal and cardiothoracic illnesses in dogs within 30 seconds.

The web-based service uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze images of dogs taken by veterinarians and uploaded into the platform.

X Caliber was constructed with big data and diagnostics videos in partnership with five South Korean universities.

“We were able to develop Korea’s first AI-based veterinary image diagnosis assistance solution by combining our expertise in AI and high-quality data from five national universities,” said Ha Min-yong, the company’s Chief Development Officer.

X Caliber is available as a subscription service for licensed veterinary clinics for ₩300,000, about $213 per month.

High accuracy

According to SK Telecom, X Caliber has an accuracy of 84% for cardiothoracic injuries and 86% for musculoskeletal images. For the vertebral heart scale, the equipment showed 97% precision.

Veterinarians can examine the results on their mobile or PCs anywhere at any time.

Lee Young-won, professor at Chungnam National University College of Veterinary Medicine, said that the commercialization of this product “is expected to serve as an important turning point for the advancement of veterinary medicine.”

The Korean company is planning to launch the service for cats next year and expand overseas distribution in Europe and Asia.
