Mars invests $185M in new pet food factory in Kazakhstan

Set to begin operations in 2031, the facility will produce 100,000 tons of pet food annually.
Mars Petcare Kazakhstan is building a pet food manufacturing plant in the Almaty region of southeastern Kazakhstan, following an agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture.
The $185 million (€170M) facility will be designed to have a production capacity of 100,000 tons per year.
“We are currently engaging with relevant authorities in Kazakhstan to explore potential ways to support the sustainable development of the pet food industry,” a Mars spokesperson tells GlobalPETS.
Kazinform International, Kazakhstan’s state-owned news agency, reports that the construction of the plant is expected to start by mid-2026.
Construction and commissioning of the plant are scheduled for completion by 31 December 2030, with operations starting on 1 January 2031.
National impact
Once operational, the new facility will create 200 jobs, with at least 85% being Kazakhstani citizens.
According to the office of the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan, measures for training and professional development of personnel are also planned.
Government officials say the project is expected to make a significant contribution to the development of Kazakhstan’s processing industry, expand the range of high-value domestically produced goods, and create a sustainable production base in the region.
The facility is part of Kazakhstan’s General Plan of Alatau, a long-term development plan for the new Alatau district being built near Almaty, the country’s largest city.
The first stage of the plan, scheduled for 2026-2027, comprises 21 projects totaling ₸365.1 billion ($760M/€700M). The second stage, set for 2028-2030, includes 9 projects totaling ₸312.5 billion ($650M/€600M).
