Pet companies advance innovation through patents, approvals and product launches

From product launches and regulatory approvals to newly granted patents, these developments are shaping pet care, animal health and pet food. GlobalPETS has the details.

Wag Trendz

The Texas-based urban dog gear brand launched NeoCool, a patent-pending cooling dog harness designed to help dogs during hot weather through passive airflow technology.

The launch comes as rising summer temperatures and extreme heat advisories across the US increase awareness of risks for dogs. Wag Trendz says the product also responds to growing demand for harnesses that offer improved breathability and airflow, as well as reduced heat and moisture retention, compared to traditional designs.

According to the company, NeoCool features a patent-pending perforated design combined with breathable quick-dry air mesh, allowing the harness to provide cooling without requiring soaking.

The company cites third-party laboratory tests showing the product achieved more than 2.5 times greater airflow and reduced heat and moisture retention compared to traditional harnesses.

Orion Animal Health

Orion Animal Health, a division of Orion Corporation, has received US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for Tessie, an oral medication for noise aversion and separation anxiety in dogs.

Tessie contains tasipimidine, an Orion-developed proprietary molecule that acts on the central nervous system by blocking the startle reflex and reducing arousal. While intended for short-term use, the medication can be administered for up to 9 consecutive days.

Tasipimidine reduces the release of a brain chemical involved in the body’s fight-or-flight response, helping dogs feel less anxious or fearful in stressful situations. According to the company, Tessie is expected to become available in the US by mid-2027 through Orion’s long-term strategic partner, Zoetis, a New Jersey-based animal health company.

Corbion

The Dutch manufacturer of sustainable food ingredients has been awarded a new US patent covering a liquid suspension product that combines algae-derived omega-3 with vegetable oil for various pet food applications.

The technology is used in the company’s AlgaPrime DHA LS ingredient, a sustainable alternative to fish oil produced through algal fermentation. According to Corbion, the ingredient is fully traceable and helps reduce reliance on ocean resources.

AlgaPrime is made from a single-cell algae strain grown at scale in enclosed ponds using proprietary cultivation techniques designed to maximize DHA production. Corbion says its patent portfolio now includes protection in Europe, Latin America, China and Australia, with additional territories under review.

The Paws Lab

The UK-based premium pet care brand has launched a range of hygiene products featuring SilverTi+, a patented antimicrobial technology that combines nano-silver and titanium dioxide.

According to the company, the technology provides enhanced antimicrobial protection compared to traditional colloidal silver, an ingredient commonly used in pet hygiene products such as sprays, shampoos and wipes.

The new range includes ear cleaners, dental care products and tear stain removers with fragrance-free and alcohol-free formulations. The Paws Lab says the formulations have undergone validation or testing involving organizations such as Microbac Laboratories and SGS (Switzerland), and that the technology meets relevant FDA-related standards.

BiomEdit

The American biotech company has secured foundational patents supporting its lead program, BE-101, a novel, non-antibiotic therapy that uses engineered probiotic bacteria to deliver antibodies that help prevent disease in poultry.

The patent portfolio includes “Genetically Modified Lactobacillus and Uses Thereof” (US Patent 12,599,637) and “Probiotic Compositions Comprising Lactobacillus reuteri Strains and Methods of Use” (US Patent 12,427,174), which cover engineered probiotic bacteria and their therapeutic applications. 

BiomEdit tells GlobalPETS that while BE-101 is initially focused on poultry, the program is also being adapted for pets, taking into account “complex microbial ecosystems that influence gut health, metabolism, immune function and disease processes” in dogs and cats. 

The biotech company expects the therapy to receive conditional licensure from the US Department of Agriculture’s Center for Veterinary Biologics (USDA CVB) in the third quarter of 2026, subject to the standard regulatory review process, with commercial launch readiness planned for the fourth quarter.
