Pet owners weigh in on flea and tick treatments

A global survey highlights pet owners’ views on ease, taste and effectiveness of antiparasitic products.
According to research from Yummypets, powered by LOOP, over 9 in 10 dog owners globally believe it is easy to administer pest protection products to their pets. Meanwhile, about 8 in 10 cat owners share the same view.
The survey was of 2,926 pet owners in 6 countries: Brazil (734), Canada (340), France (460), Mexico (530), the UK (360) and the US (502).
For cat owners, 88% in Canada say it is easy to administer pest protection products, followed by 84% in Brazil, 83% in Mexico, 82% in the US, 81% in France and 77% in the UK.
A smaller share of respondents say they find it difficult to administer these products to their pets.
The percentage of dog owners who reported difficulty ranged from just 1% in the US and Mexico to 5% in France. For cat owners, the figures were slightly higher: 11% of British owners reported difficulty. France (8%), the US (6%), Mexico (5%), Canada and Brazil (4%) followed.
Oral antiparasitic products
Most pet owners believe their pets like the taste of oral antiparasitic products. The highest agreement was recorded in the US and Mexico (54% each), followed by Canada (51%) and Brazil (46%).
Meanwhile, responses were less positive in Europe, with 54% of British pet owners and 48% of French pet owners saying their pets do not like the taste.
Product effectiveness
According to the Yummypets survey, a strong majority of both dog and cat owners believe pest protection products are effective for their pets.
Among dog owners, confidence is highest in the UK (90%), followed by Canada, the US, Mexico and France (each at 88%), and Brazil (84%).
For cat owners, the UK again leads with 92%, followed by France (87%), Mexico and the US (86% each), Brazil (85%) and Canada (82%).
Only a small share of pet owners considers pest protection products ineffective. In Canada, this view is held by 2% of dog owners and 3% of cat owners, while in both the US and Mexico, 7% of dog and cat owners share this view.
In France, 6% of dog owners and 4% of cat owners say the products don’t work well, compared with 5% and 2%, respectively, in the UK.
