Petgood raises €2.5 million to “spread awareness” of insect protein

The Swedish pet food manufacturer will use the capital injection to boost its R&D capabilities and expand across Europe.

Petgood Founder and CEO Pernilla Westergren said all dogs and cats should have access to the benefits of insect-based pet food. It’s like meat but better for both the pet and the climate,” she said.

The funding will enable Petgood to accelerate our growth across Europe and intensify our innovation through R&D.

Petgood recently published a research article highlighting the health benefits of using black soldier fly fat in dog and cat food. It concluded that insect protein is free from antibiotics which are otherwise used abundantly in the meat industry.

The funding was backed by Axel Johnson and sustainability-focused VC fund Course Corrected.

International footprint

Earlier in the year, Petgood raised $2.1 million in funding to expand its international presence, especially in Australia. As a result, they were able to partner with local insect farm Future Green Solutions in the western part of Australia.

Founded in 2020 by Pernilla Westergren and Thomas Dalebring, it offers a range of insect-based dog products with natural and high-quality insect protein, vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids from vegetables, fruit, and superfoods.

The company sells its product online, at veterinarian clinics, and at leading retailers in Sweden, such as VetZoo and ZOO.se, in the Nordics and Germany.
