Tesco to launch online marketplace, including pet food
UK’s biggest supermarket chain will offer third-party products on its e-commerce platform.
Tesco is expected to launch an online marketplace, reportedly offering “a broad range of third-party products.”
The e-commerce platform is expected to spotlight pet food, in addition to health and beauty products and alcohol, and offer larger pack sizes than those available in-store.
“We’re always looking at ways to improve our customer offer, and we are in ongoing discussions with suppliers about how we can continue to build out our online proposition,” a spokesperson of the supermarket chain tells GlobalPETS.
The launch date of the new marketplace is unknown, but some sources suggest it could be in early 2024.
In 2012, the retailer launched ‘Tesco Direct’ offering non-groceries through a marketplace model, but it ceased operations in 2018. Analysts argue that the upcoming launch may prove successful, and if the company integrates the marketplace into its website ‘tesco.com,’ it may pose competition to omnichannel retailers like Amazon.
