Which US states contribute the most to the pet food industry?

We reveal where the highest concentration of pet food facilities is across the North American country.

New data released by the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) concludes that the pet food manufacturing industry and the 523 pet food plants in operation across the nation generated $102.3 billion (€‎94.2B) in revenue last year.

Missouri and Kansas brought in the most revenue, with $12 billion (€‎11B) and $10.4 billion (€‎9.5B), respectively. But which states have the most facilities and production levels?

Plants

In 2022, Pennsylvania had the most pet food facilities, totaling 59. The fifth-most populous state in the United States retained the leading position of previous years despite losing 13 production facilities.

Michigan (33), Wisconsin (28), Nebraska (27) and Washington (26) follow in the ranking.

Minnesota and California were in the top 5 states in 2017. However, they lost 4 and 5 facilities, respectively, which meant they fell out of the top 5 in 2022.

According to the AFIA, the number of pet food manufacturers increased from 514 to 523 over the last 5 years.

A total of 17 states gained new facilities, whereas 16 states noted a reduction. A further 17 states maintained the same number of establishments during this period.

Production

Texas is the US state that produces the most pet food, with a total of 443,049 tons of processed ingredients, followed by California (with 401,804 tons).

According to the AFIA, Florida and New York produce more than 200,000 tons of pet food ingredients.

The states that produce the least pet food are Alaska (10,040 tons), North Dakota (8,265 tons) and Wyoming with just 7,673 tons.
