Veterinarians.org research unveiled that co-sleeping with animals reduces stress, anxiety, and loneliness.
A July 2022 survey of 1,000 American dog owners concluded that 76% allow their dogs to sleep in the same bed. The survey revealed that 80% of single pet parents were open to co-sleeping, while 73% of married pet owners allowed their pets to sleep in their beds.
According to figures, nearly a third of married pet owners disagree with their spouses on whether or not to allow pets to sleep on the bed at night.
Less stress and anxiety
Furthermore, 72% of pet owners who sleep with their dogs say they experience a nightmare at least once in a given month.
Statistics show that the top reasons why pet parents sleep with their dog is to reduce feelings of stress (67%), anxiety (60%), and loneliness (59%). Respondents express feelings of comfort and safety and that co-sleeping with their pet reduces depression.
Most married pet owners (56%) say the experience of sharing a bed with their partner and dog improves sleep quality. One-third admitted they have a better night of rest sharing their bed just with the dog.
Keeping the animal out of bed
Pet parents who prefer to keep dogs off the bed justified their decision with concerns about germs and cleanliness (45%) and fleas and ticks (40%).
Nearly a third of respondents explained that their dogs are active during the night, which can negatively impact their quality of sleep.
Even without sharing their bed, 26% of pet owners feel guilty about their decision, and 5 out of 10 still keep their pets in the same bedroom.
