The 350,000 sq. ft. center in Surrey – a city in the province of British Columbia – is the company’s second-largest supply hub for pet products in Canada.
It will support 130 stores across the western provinces, offering Pet Valu 3 times the capacity of its existing warehouse in Vancouver.
“This is a key element that will enable us to continue to grow our store network in Western Canada and better serve our existing stores without relying on more expensive, third-party storage alternatives,” Chief Supply Chain Officer Nico Weidel tells GlobalPETS.
He adds that the new facility also equips the retailer to expand their product range, enabling corporate and franchised stores to place more direct orders.
This Surrey facility is part of Pet Valu’s C$100 million ($73.7M/€66.9M) supply chain transformation investment and is expected to be fully operational by the fourth quarter of this year.
High-performing facility
Equipped with advanced warehouse management, safety systems and electric trucks, the new distribution center, designed for safety, efficiency and environmental performance, reflects the company’s commitment to its Four Paws service model.
Weidel adds that the advanced systems “provide improved product availability, faster order processing, and enhanced customer service levels for stores and eCommerce customers alike.”
Pet Valu plans to automate its piece-pick operations, i.e., the process of selecting individual items from the warehouse to fulfill customer orders, starting in 2026.
