Wanpy, the main brand of Yantai, has been a world-renowned pet food brand since 1998. The company adheres to its theme ‘Treat pets as family members and care more about their health’. This concept and approach is integrated in their research & development as well as in the manufacturing process of their super premium pet treats.
Pet treats emerge
Due to the humanization trend, pets have become important members of the family. Believing that ‘what is good for me is also good for my pet’ has led pet owners to require comprehensive nutrition and convenient feeding. On top of that, they like to have modern tools with which they can interact with their pets, and this is where treats play an important role. Pet treats have emerged at the right moment and have thus become a rapid increasing segment.
Human consumption standards
All selected raw materials and ingredients meet export and human consumption standards. This approach is in line with the company’s long term policy to meet set criteria and requirements standards, including ISO 22000, ISO 9001, HACCP Food Safety system, SGS North America Supplier Qualification Audit (SQA) and BRC. Moreover, the company is fully registered as a pet food exporter with the FDA and EU, and has passed the governmental audit by AQIS and CFIA.
Qualitative market research
Wanpy’s product development, its quest to find new concepts, is based on qualitative market research which in turn is based on the experiences of pet owners, pet food retailers, and pet clinics. This peer group is located in 15 different large to medium-sized cities. In each city, the company interviewed and observed 100 clients for this research. This has not only provided insight into changing consumer behaviour, but also into current products, competitors, developments of market channels, etc.
In order to ensure that pets can absorb essential nutrients for the benefit of their health and well-being, Wanpy’s formulas are developed in strict accordance with the nutritional requirements for pet food, which are beneficial to digestion and absorption. Process design in the plant takes place with adopted versions of international advanced instruments and equipment of the highest processing technology and hygiene standards. After the product design the trial production starts, as well as palatability tests, which takes at least six months.
External test phase
After this internal test phase is completed, the external test phase starts. Well-known domestic experts and scientific research institutions conduct comprehensive studies into the effects of the pet treats on skin, coat colour, exercise performance, digestive system and immune system. They also carry out research to ensure the safety, nutrition, health and good palatability of the Wanpy products.
