AFIA promotes VP Public Relations to COO

Sarah Novak has been linked to the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) for more than 15 years and will now lead the entity’s operations.
The trade association stated that Novak is an “invaluable asset” with an “excellent pulse on the member’s needs and the staff’s ability to serve them.”
“In the new position, she will work to put strategies in place that allow the organization to perform at optimal capacity while maximizing member service and satisfaction. I am confident she will be a key part of taking AFIA to the next level,” said President and CEO Constance Cullman.
Prior to joining AFIA in 2007, Novak served as Director of Membership with the US Grains Council, a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing profitability for farmers through export market development.
Regulation of novel food products
AFIA represents the business, legislative, and regulatory interests of the US pet and animal food industry and its suppliers. In November 2022, AFIA urged the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to regulate “novel food products” for animals and pets as feeds, not drugs.
Current policy demands that new pet food ingredients be regulated as animal medications instead of feed components, which is a “costly and cumbersome process,” said AFIA. “These products are clearly food ingredients and should be regulated as such.”
