Inflation snapshot: Pet product prices stabilize in June while service costs remain elevated

Although persistent inflation is a major macroeconomic concern for the remainder of the year, June’s consumer price data indicate that price pressures observed between March and April continued to ease.

Veterinary services and other pet services, however, remained subject to persistent price increases in the countries analyzed, with monthly increases adding more pressure to annual inflation.  

According to Christoph Wunn, Director of Consumer Products and Services at the investment bank William Blair, as a consequence of the more volatile macroeconomic environment, consumer “spending behavior will remain highly category-dependent, with price sensitivity concentrated in commoditized segments.”

“While certain discretionary categories are experiencing pullback, the consumer has proven broadly resilient despite sustained inflation and elevated rates,” Wunn tells GlobalPETS. For the pet segment, Wunn expects this to lead to some trading down within food and treats, offset by the continued growth of premium and functional subcategories.

Europe

In the European Union, prices for pets and pet products fell by 0.2% month-over-month (MoM) in June, after stabilizing in May, according to data from Eurostat, the statistical office of the EU. Year-over-year (YoY), the category has seen a 0.5% increase in prices.

In Europe, monthly CPI increases were led by the Netherlands and Switzerland at 1.6% each, followed by Bulgaria (1.3%) and Latvia (1%). Estonia (-5.5%), Lithuania (-2.5%) and Türkiye (-2.4%) registered the largest declines. 

Veterinary and other services for pets reported a monthly inflation rate of 0.1% in both the EU and the eurozone. At the country level, the most pressured markets were Slovakia (1.7%), Bulgaria (1.2%), Czechia (0.9%) and Latvia (0.9%).

Across all items, European Union annual inflation was 2.9% in June, down from 3.3% in May, but still up from the 2.3% registered in June 2025. 

The price increase in the bloc had a contribution of services (+1.51 percentage points, pp); energy (+0.77 pp); food, alcohol and tobacco (+0.29 pp); and non-energy industrial goods (+0.18 pp). 

UK

In the UK, monthly inflation for products for pets continued a descending trajectory initiated in May, as data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show a decline of 0.1% in the CPI for the category.

Prices of veterinary and other services for pets, on the other hand, kept rising, with a monthly rate of 0.4%.

Across the broader economy, prices grew 0.1% MoM, slower than the 0.3% rise in the previous month. In 12 months, the CPI rose by 2.6%. “Transport and food and non-alcoholic beverages made the largest downward contributions to the monthly change in annual rates,” the ONS reported. 

US

In the US, CPI for pet food and treats increased by 0.2% in June after falling in May, while prices for pets, pet supplies and accessories remained unchanged.

Veterinary and other services increased by 0.2%, after having gone in different directions in the previous month. On an annual basis, prices for both categories grew by 5.1%.

On the other hand, the overall CPI fell by 0.4%, following several months of sharp increases. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, “This decline in the all-items index was the largest 1-month decrease since April 2020.”

The main factor behind the price upticks in recent months was energy rates, which finally eased, falling 5.7% in June after rising 3.9% in May, 3.8% in April, and 10.9% in March. “The energy index was the largest contributor to the monthly all items decrease, more than offsetting increases in other indexes including those for shelter and food,” the Bureau explains. 

Canada

Prices for pet food and supplies in Canada are steadily falling. Compared to May, the CPI decreased by 0.2% in June. This drop is even greater compared to June 2025, at 1%.

The overall index in the country fell more sharply on a monthly basis, by 0.4%, marking the “largest monthly decline since December 2024,” according to the government agency Statistics Canada. On an annual basis, however, prices are 2.8% higher.

The agency also addressed easing in gasoline prices, which increased at a slower rate on a YoY basis in June (+20.5%) compared to May (+33.2%).

Brazil

Brazil is also moving toward normalization. Animal treatment increased by 1.8% in May; in June, it remained practically stable, with an increase of 0.01%. Pet food fell by 0.47%, while hygiene services rose 1.13%.

In the past 12 months, prices for both treatment and hygiene services increased by more than 6%, while food is up by only 0.1% in the period. 

The average inflation rate in the country continues to decelerate. It rose by 0.16% in June compared to 0.6% in May and 0.7% in April. Over the last 12 months, the index stood at 4.64%.

“The largest variation (0.63%) and the greatest impact (0.10 pp) came from the Housing group. On the other hand, the Food and Beverages group, with a decrease of 0.24%, registered the largest negative variation and the greatest negative impact (-0.05 pp),” the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics reported. 

India 

India’s combined index for garden products and pets grew by 0.3% MoM, driven by increases in rural (0.4%) and urban (0.2%) areas, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. 

In 12 months, inflation stood at 3.8% for the category and was stronger in urban areas (4%) than in rural municipalities (3.6%).

Inflation for all items increased at a more accelerated pace, with the general CPI rising 1% MoM and 4.74% YoY. Food inflation in the country continues to pressure consumers, having risen by 5.3% YoY in June versus 4.8% in May.
