How pet supplies performed on Singles’ Day?

Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com shares with GlobalPETS which pet categories sold more during the shopping event on 11 November.

It is the time of year bargain hunters have been gearing up for, and e-commerce platforms are putting all their efforts into successful shopping events.

The Singles’ Day festival, also known as Double 11, took place in China on 11 November. It is believed that the shopping event ended in an estimated $156 billion (€143.7B) in sales, up from $128.2 billion (118.1B) last year.

JD.com, China’s largest online retailer, unveiled that the platform had a 3.4-fold increase in new shop registrations during the event. The number of merchants participating in the event also increased 1.5 times compared to 2022.

Biodegradable cat litter

A recent survey of 3,000 Chinese consumers by consultancy firm Bain & Company concluded that 77% planned to spend less or maintain spending on Singles’ Day in 2023.

However, this didn’t seem to be the case for pet supplies. GlobalPETS learned that sales of eco-friendly and biodegradable cat litter on JD.com increased by 550% compared to the previous year.

“Consumers are more concerned about the safety of pet food ingredients, and natural, additive-free, and high-quality products have become key factors in consumer purchasing decisions,” admits a company spokesperson.

Dry food, pet tech and senior animals

Dry food was one of the most successful categories across pet supplies. The sales data from JD.com shows that sales of this type of product increased by 265% compared to last year’s event.

Sales of senior dog food also increased by 168% on the Chinese platform. It is believed more than 13 million pets in China will be entering their senior years, accounting for nearly 11% of the total number of cats and dogs in the country.

Pet tech also did well, as the Chinese e-commerce giant saw a 109% increase in sales in this category.
