Italy introduces new professional code for pet groomers

The new classification enhances professional recognition and streamlines administrative processes.
On 1 April 2025, Italy will implement a new Attività Economiche (Classification of Economic Activity) or ATECO code – 96.99.12 – dedicated to the pet grooming sector.
ATECO is a classification system that categorizes various economic activities for statistical, fiscal and administrative purposes.
This move aims to differentiate grooming services from other pet-related activities, such as pet shops and boarding establishments.
The benefits
The introduction of the 96.99.12 code is expected to provide several key benefits, such as offering pet groomers greater professional recognition by clearly defining their role within the broader pet care industry.
It will also simplify bureaucratic processes by enabling more accurate tax and contribution classifications, which could lead to smoother financial and administrative management. The code will allow for a more detailed assessment of the sector’s risk levels, which may influence occupational health protections in the future.
Additionally, this move allows groomers to access targeted incentives, financing opportunities and data-driven policies designed to support their professional development.
Compliance requirements
To comply with the new classification, all grooming businesses must update their VAT numbers, revise contracts and remain informed about the implications of this change, which might include attending seminars or webinars on the new ATECO code.
The implementation of the 96.99.12 code marks a significant milestone in Italy’s recognition of pet grooming as a distinct industry. It additionally offers opportunities for further growth and refinement of professional standards within the sector.
