Mars Pet Nutrition achieves 100% sustainably sourced fish ingredients in Europe

The pet food manufacturer believes that this is a “new milestone” in the company’s ongoing environmental commitment.
Mars has announced that it has achieved its target to source the fish used in its pet food brands in Europe in a sustainable way, including Whiskas, Pedigree, Sheba and Cesar.
“While our business accounts for a small share of the global seafood market, we continue to play our part in supporting a healthy future for ocean ecosystems and the seafood sector, helping all to grow and thrive in a responsible way,” claimed Deri Watkins, Regional President at Mars Pet Nutrition Europe.
The manufacturer accepts as “sustainably sourced fish” any supply that is certified by credible third parties and aims to source from fisheries that are managed to maintain the diversity of the fish ecosystem.
This announcement is aligned with Mars’ sourcing guidelines and its $1 billion (€933M) sustainable plan launched in 2017.
The Sheba brand is also working to deliver the world’s “largest coral reef restoration program”. According to the company, they plan to restore more than 185,000 square meters of coral reefs by 2029.
