Mondi opens laboratory to test the recyclability of its products

The packaging multinational launched a new facility in Austria that will further investigate the use of non-paper components.

With this new laboratory, Mondi seeks to speed up the process of developing sustainable packaging. Currently, 78% of the group-wide portfolio is already either reusable, recyclable or compostable.

“This recycling lab enables us to move closer to our MAP2030 goals of making 100% of our products fulfill these requirements by 2025,” said to GlobalPETS Elisabeth Schwaiger, Mondi’s Head of R&D and IP Flexible Packaging

Mondi explained that paper packaging offers sustainability benefits, but has limitations for products such as perishable food. To improve its functionality it needs to add barrier coating that can impact recyclability.

All the data collected at the new laboratory, which is located at the company’s existing mill in Frantschach, 260 km from the capital Vienna, will be used to improve existing products and provide reliable information about the environmental impact.

Mondi will also use the results to determine how the design of new packaging can be improved as well as how best to improve the circularity of its materials.
