Pet food industry welcomes Joe Biden’s nominee for top agriculture trade post
Alexis Taylor is set to become the new U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) undersecretary of trade and foreign agricultural affairs, which also governs pet food policies.
The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) welcomed the “vital” announcement made by President Biden a few days ago as the country’s animal food industry’s ability to grow relies “on filling the increasing need for animal protein and dairy foods in export markets.”
AFIA President and CEO Constance Cullman said that Taylor is “an ideal candidate” for representing and advocating on behalf of the U.S agricultural interests to expand export opportunities and maintain U.S. competitiveness in the global marketplace.
Taylor currently serves as Oregon’s Director of Agriculture. She also worked as deputy undersecretary for the USDA Farm and Foreign Agricultural Service during the Obama administration.
She still needs to be confirmed by the US Senate and some insiders are urging representatives to move swiftly as this is a critical role given the current global circumstances.
The U.S animal feed and pet food manufacturers exported over $7.5 billion (€7.1B) in products in 2021, including $5.5 billion in feed and feed ingredients and $2 billion (€1.89M) in pet food. This is a 22% increase in value over 2020.
