Spanish pet food industry increases revenue by 14%

All food types registered sales growth last year, with the biggest increase being wet products for cats.

The Spanish pet food industry hit €‎1.7 billion ($1.8B) in 2022, according to the National Association of Manufacturers of Food for Companion Animals (ANFAAC).

This is a 14.4% increase from the year before, when turnover was €‎1.4 billion ($1.6B).

“These figures show again that the sector is going through an optimal moment despite difficulties in accessing raw materials and the confines of energy prices, transport and the rise of global inflation; obstacles that the industry keeps facing head-on,” says ANFAAC’s Secretary General Santiago de Andrés.

Growth across the board

Dry food represents the biggest chunk of the pet food industry, with dogs accounting for €‎736.3 million ($794.9M). This is a 12.8% increase from 2021 when the segment reached sales of €‎652.7 million ($704.6M).

Dry cat food reached €‎367.5M ($396.7M) last year, 16.6% more than the previous year (€315.3M/$340.3).

The biggest increase was registered in the wet cat food category, a 17.6% increase to €260.3 million ($281M). Wet dog food hit a 13.8% increase to €141.5 million ($152.8M).

Less volume

However, there was a slight decrease in the volume of sales (-0.5%).

According to the data released by the ANFAAC, the local pet food volume dropped to 562.388 tons compared to 565.395 tons in 2021. The dog food volume fell by 1%, whereas cat food volumes increased by 0.5%.

Data analyst site Statista expects pet food revenue in Spain to hit $2.20 billion (€2B) by 2026.
