UK adds pet collars to price inflation measurement tool

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) considers this accessory a “representative item” of the citizen’s shopping basket since the start of the pandemic.
The ONS added pet collars as one of the shopping items to calculate the so-called Consumer Prices Index (CPI) because of the increased consumer spending on pet accessories.
According to different studies, 66% of pet owners buy accessories for their animals.
The UK government agency also included to the basket of goods new products such as meat-free sausages, canned pulses, sports bras and antibacterial surface wipes.
The changes have been applied from February and they will appear in the price inflation statistics that are expected to be published on March 23rd.
Around 180,000 separate price quotations are collected every month in around 140 locations around the UK to compile the indices, covering around 730 representative consumer goods and services.
