AFIA reveals US pet food export numbers of 2020

The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) announces that US companies have exported $1.7 billion worth dog & cat food in export value in 2020.

The $1.7 billion is in export value, not consumer value. So conservatively speaking, you can assume this is worth around $3.4 billion in consumer sales.

How much is this compared to domestic sales?

The APPA recently revealed that the total sales of pet food and treats in the US in 2020 was $42 billion. Although this is food and treats for all types of pets and not just dogs and cats, domestic sales are 12 times higher than export sales.

The other key numbers

The overall export value for feed, feed ingredients and pet food increased by $874 million, or 7.2%, over 2019.

Dog and cat food, with its $1.7 billion, landed third in the top 5 of exports, ranked by value. Topping the list is soybean meal, with an export value of $3.7 billion. Dried distillers grains’ exports had a value of $2.3 billion.
