Mars Petcare to implement new recycled packaging in top 3 markets
It will start the rollout of its food-safe recycled packaging in the United Kingdom, Poland and Switzerland in the first quarter of 2022.
The American manufacturer confirmed to GlobalPETS that it hopes to accelerate the rollout across their product range “throughout 2022” as part of a company’s strategy to reduce by 25% the use of plastic in their products.
But the low availability of advanced recycled resins is slowing the plans until there is a higher availability. “The future availability of Advanced Recycled materials is slowly becoming more transparent and with this increased visibility, we will be able to plan and schedule increased rollout of these products with more accuracy,” a company spokesperson said.
Cat food brand SHEBA will be the first to experience the changes in its packaging. The company confirmed that the packaging is still under design, but it will be presented in a gusseted pouch and 85g portion.
The product packs will have the same look as currently but Mars is open to new redesigns in the near future, including potentially greater recycled content.
“Ideally, the information we’ll provide will be a mix of on-pack labeling, corporate and brand communications. We will also partner with our peers and industry groups to encourage clarity in labeling and communications for the future.”
The company’s $1 billion Sustainable in a Generation Plan launched in 2017 establishes that by 2025 all the pet food packaging should be “reusable, recyclable or compostable.”
