Mars to release recycled cat food packaging this year

Mars Petcare Europe will start this 2022 to deploy food-safe recycled plastic in its wet pet food packaging as part of a company’s strategy to reduce by 25% the use of this material in their products.
Cat food brand SHEBA will be the first to experience the changes in its packaging in some European markets as the company aims to give pet parents “more sustainable choices.”
“We are committed to doing our part to help drive a circular economy, which includes redesigning our packages for circularity,” said Barry Parkin, Chief Procurement and Sustainability Officer at Mars.
Parkin added that they want to achieve 30% average recycled content in the plastic pet food pouches.
Mars claims they will become the first company in the pet food industry to deploy food-safe recycled plastic as part of their $1 billion Sustainable in a Generation Plan launched in 2017.
The plan establishes that by 2025 all the pet food packagings should be “reusable, recyclable or compostable.”
