Purina launches its first recyclable wet cat pouch ranges

The manufacturer has started to sell some of its brands in cardboard boxes across several European markets.

The Nestlé subsidiary started to roll out new mono-material and recyclable pouches in two of its biggest brands, Gourmet Mon Petit and Felix Soup.

The new packaging for Gourmet Mon Petit has been introduced in mid-May in 20 countries across Europe, including the UK, Ireland, Belgium, and Italy.

The new recyclable pouches for the Felix Soup range will follow in early 2023 in 17 countries in Europe and across the Middle East and North Africa regions.

The pouches are made of Polypropylene, which can withstand heating and sterilization processes, replacing the non-recyclable, multi-layer alternatives of the past. They were first introduced under the Felix brand in the Netherlands as part of a year-long pilot in 2020.

Pouches will be sold in a cardboard box which is itself recyclable, containing six pouches with three different flavors.

In the UK, the government recently announced the introduction of recyclable plastic film and flexible packaging collections for households across the UK by March 2027. “Simplification of our pouch structures will also enable this type of packaging to be part of flexible packaging household recycling collection,” declared Sokhna Gueye, Head of Packaging Nestlé in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

“We look forward to rolling out mono-material pouches across the rest of our UK pet portfolio in the coming years,” she added.

According to CEO of Nestlé Purina Europe Jeff Hamilton, this innovation is a “significant step forward” in the manufacturer’s drive to achieve 100% recyclable or reusable packaging by 2025.
