Scoular acquires fish processing facility to scale up pet food ingredients

The new plant in Washington state will supply frozen fish to pet food manufacturers.

The Nebraska ingredient producer has announced the acquisition of Northwest Farm Food Cooperative’s frozen fish processing facility in Burlington, Washington.

The facility, which will upcycle fish trimmings into frozen fish ingredients for pet food manufacturers, will expand Scoular’s offerings in salmon, tuna, sole, cod, hake and other pet food ingredients.

In October 2022, the company also opened a similar facility in Oregon with an investment of $17.5 million (€16.2M) as part of a joint venture with Da Yang Seafood and Bornstein Seafoods.

Scoular says that both facilities will collectively improve the manufacturing process of high-quality and sustainable ingredients.

“Scoular has been working directly with Northwest Farm Food for many years, and they are a well-respected producer of frozen fish ingredients for pet food. We are excited to continue to build on this reputation and for the opportunity to bring new products to the pet food industry,” says Justin Stadden, Scoular’s Frozen Ingredient Commercial Leader.

According to the company, its agribusiness generates annual sales of around $9 billion (€8.3B) across North America and Asia.
